2012 Beehive Forensics Institute

July 7-23, 2012

Welcome to the BFI!

The Beehive Forensics Institute (BFI) at the University of Utah offers an unforgettable two-week summer learning experience in forensics that is sure to help its participants become better debaters, critical thinkers, and members of a global community. Each part of the BFI’s curriculum is carefully designed around teaching and learning methods developed by leading forensics educators and communication scholars. Our goal is to provide students with learning and critical thinking strategies that will prepare them for success, not only in debate, but also in their high-school and college careers. This year, the BFI will offer instruction in policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and public forum debate events, as well as in extemporaneous speaking.

The Beehive Forensics Institute will be held from July 7-23, 2012. Students will stay at the University of Utah’s Heritage Commons Residence Hall, take classes, and conduct research at one of the world’s premier research universities. The University of Utah is nestled in the foothills of Salt Lake City, which boasts access both to one of the busiest airports in the world and to some of the most scenic landscapes in the inter-mountain West. We’re confident that from the moment they set foot on campus, BFI students will experience a warm, welcoming environment in which students are transformed into forensic champions.

About Utah Forensics

Utah Forensics is proud to work with the high school forensics community. Our goal is to assist the local debate community by offering coaching/judging support to high schools in need, by hosting a summer workshop for active high school competitors, and by offering our campus for the annual Beehive Bonanza High School Speech and Debate Tournament.

The University of Utah Speech and Debate Team is sponsored and housed in the Department of Communication in the College of Humanities. The team focuses on three main activities: sponsoring public debate events, high school outreach, and hosting and competing in intercollegiate competitions. The University of Utah Debate Team is one of the oldest in the western United States. Utah debaters were in out-rounds at nationals in 2002 (finals), 2003, 2004 (quarter-finals), 2005, 2006, and 2011.
